OUR STORY

Crossings began with a desire and dream to create a community that looks like Jesus, that enters into the story of God with more questions than answers, and brings restoration and wholeness to the community while we all find our way back to God.

In April of 2006, Mark & Monica Nelson were approached about planting a church near downtown Knoxville and with the help of New Thing Network, Stadia, & Smoky Mountain Christian Men’s Fellowship launched this faith community known as Crossings in February, 2007.

We have been meeting for worship & teaching each Sunday in the Downtown West Regal Cinemas since 2.07 but we’ll be moving to 4 Market Square in Downtown Knoxville in January of 2009.  God has been so very good to us to give us this incredible opportunity to be partners in this vision for downtown Knoxville.

The name Crossings comes from a scene found in Genesis 32, the story of Jacob crossing the Jabbok River…

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.  Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak."
But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

We believe that Jacob's crossing of the River Jabbok is a crossing that everyone must make in their journey toward faith.  It is that place where we come face to face with God, where we wrestle to figure out if this faith is our own… a place from which we all walk away changed.

We believe God’s dream is for Crossings to be a place where people feel safe to come and wrestle with faith in God...where we all cross the River Jabbok and enter into the story of God’s relentless pursuit of us.
